One Parade Now Many

Filed under: Poetry — migueltio @ 11:33 am

One weekend

one June weekend

the second Sunday

of the sixth month

on the 5th Avenue

an event celebrating

one island

that has impacted

a great many.

The Puerto Rican Parade

started as a small occasion

walking down a Barrio street

so that Nuyorican voices

could get their message out

by the carrying of flags or signs

and the marching of feet

no one knew then

that the first parade

would ignite such a future

for other Latin people in New York

to add to the city’s beat.

Dominican

Colombian

and other Latino festivals

all exist today

because Puerto Ricans

let the city know

that theirs would not go away

that their message of pride

mattered just as much

as any gringo holiday.

Latino pride is much more

than just parades

and celebrations

its having a voice

in everyday life by

the older and younger generations

but it is important

for once a year

to thank Puerto Ricans

with grateful elations

for standing up

to an old machine

by creating new vibrations.

(The NY Puerto Rican Parade, and the voices of all those involved opened the gates for all Latinos to show their pride in NYC and everywhere. GRACIAS!)
