Express Lives

We live our present
in the speed of the
train in the dark of
tunnels well underground as
we miss all the beauty of
life going by.

Fast from station to station
stop to stop along only
for the ride only to get off
claiming what we think is
entitled
rightfully ours.

We choose our train our
single line and destination
The A
The B
Number 5
Number 6
our mind only content to
think in a pre-programmed direction
playing it safe and
only returning whence we came.

We are told what lines
we must ride what
directions we must
follow as we can no longer
go where “they” do not
want us, just as gone are
the Number 9 and many
stops long forgotten.

Our passion only flowing
along the line we take
with our heart’s only
excitement over one snippet
perk or another,
“This is a lung bound
express. The next stop
is the left ventricle.
Please stand clear of the
closing artery.”
The beat turns faster at
a comment
on our text or a picture on our
screen then we slow it bowing
our heads noticing not
the beautiful details
zipping by while we briefly
elevate from the tunnel’s
dark concrete.

Sometimes we beat
too rapidly from slow
to fast like the
runaway train that
dashed and crashed
in Northern Spain
our resulting trip
disappointment and pain
thus if we took a
breath a little deeper
took a look a
little longer we might just
find some of the beautiful world
we “thought” our
same old ride
was leading to.
