New Years Beneath The Palms

Filed under: Poetry — migueltio @ 10:01 pm

Sunrise over Indian
River as gentle breezes touch
like little caresses of tropical
pleasures like the first tastes of
sweet mango or fresh coconut
milk just tapped with my
machete transporting my
taste buds from a lifeless
suspension in a non-sensory
limbo to a heaven somewhere
just past the toucan’s habitat.

Lights moving on the nearby
causeway expose morning
commuters on and off the
island having risen early not
long after partying late with
fireworks coloring the clouds
hiding in the darkness with a
new depth of light and
love to look upon
us who dwell below
their existence.

Alone upon this pier
except for one lonely
pelican searching for early
fish his eyes like
mine upon the water
ahead scoping out for what
is alive or settling for what
is dead soon hoping to
devour at this new
day’s early hour a taste of
new energy new
vitality new
resolution new

Sunrise advancing higher
exposing now more
visible palms their fronds
catching the breezes pointing
their tips toward life’s
directions putting behind last
year’s rejections calming my
eyes as I watch
them high like
a flowering
umbrella decorating
