Many Tides Ago

This shore
enjoyed
today
by many
as has been
done
for many
years
but long
before
these days
of fun
this shore
had seen
many
tears.

Many men
and women
stripped
many men
and women
whipped
many children’s
lives
flipped
many acres
of rice
clipped.

No man
no woman
or child darker
than I
is less worthy
to touch the
stars of the
sky
with voices
singing out
with joy from
the heart
instead living
only
to pull
Massa’s cart.

From this shore
and further north
to the Caribbean
and further south
let this song
sing from out my
mouth
that I would
give my labors
straight to my
grave
in relief
of any
who lived
a slave.
