Many Tides Ago

This shore
enjoyed
today
by many
as has been
done
for many
years
but long
before
these days
of fun
this shore
had seen
many
tears.

Many men
and women
stripped
many men
and women
whipped
many children’s
lives
flipped
many acres
of rice
clipped.

No man
no woman
or child darker
than I
is less worthy
to touch the
stars of the
sky
with voices
singing out
with joy from
the heart
instead living
only
to pull
Massa’s cart.

From this shore
and further north
to the Caribbean
and further south
let this song
sing from out my
mouth
that I would
give my labors
straight to my
grave
in relief
of any
who lived
a slave.

An Orisha Honored

An ebony goddess
of beauty never seen
she is African
Caribbean
a Nubian Queen.

She the essence of
her father
she the essence of
her mother
in heart she is
our sister
in heart we are
her brother
in heart we are
one in her
as a fire
like no other
with her
the world does
turn
with her
our bellies
burn
as we long to be
near her
we love her
not fear her
she sings out
we can hear her
as she moves
we can mirror
all the light
she projects
what she adores
she protects
what is foreign
she respects
what is hostile
she rejects.

She is precious
she is priceless
with her presence
we are warmly
acquainted
with her blessings
we are joyfully
painted.
